A CHRISTMAS WISH

In these times when what we all enjoy the most is being with those we love, we turn our eyes towards those who are not as happy, whose lives are filled with problems or hardships, and we somehow wish that good things come to all of them somehow. Here is a story about a little boy and his big Christmas wish...

Ah yes. The holly, jolly Christmas season! The gifts, the love, the wishes, the good, the naughty…but most importantly, the people. Now this is not a normal, all-magic Santa Christmas story, it's just a small kid with a big wish type of story. We circle around the Christmas day of a troubled kid called Jimmy. Let's start shall we?

It's the 24th, the day before Christmas. And it's quite a joyful morning for most.

Jimmy woke up from his well-loved sleep and headed downstairs rubbing his eyes as he climbed down the stairs into the kitchen. His dad Michel quickly came over to him and handed him a piece of paper while saying “Good mornin’, Jimmy! Did you have a good sleep? Daddy's busy right now, but here's a paper, so why don't you write what you want to Santa!” He shoved the paper in his half-awake son's hands and scurried away grabbing his bag and jacket before opening the front door and murmuring a quick bye. He paused for a second at the doorstep with a worried look on his face, but shrugged it off and left.

Jimmy looked at the paper and sighed, making his way up to his room again. He sat on his desk chair and wondered what he wanted. He sat there for a while thinking about some sports cars and new video games, but he didn't write either. He just sat in silence before finally grabbing a pen and writing a sentence. He dropped his pen and fell on his bed. Even though it was the day before Christmas he didn't feel festive or happy, just sad and neglected. For a while he just lay there, staring deep into the wall for about an hour before standing up and leaving home.

Now it was around six pm and his dad arrived home. The dad opened the door and, to his surprise, he didn't see an excited Jimmy there, nor a sad Jimmy. Just no one. Jimmy would often go for playtime with their neighbours' children, so the dad thought nothing of it for a good while until the clock struck 8 pm. He was dead worried. He searched the house (twice) and called all his friends to ask if he was with them. But to no appeal. Every answer was a variation of no or no why. He grew even more sick in the stomach every time. Suddenly he got an unknown call. He picked up worry written all over his face and tone as he said “Hello?” A kind sounding voice said “Hello, California state hospital speaking. Am I talking with Mr Mayer? Your son has come to visit his mother - Mrs Mayer. You should pick him up, he's in a bad shape…” she murmured. But before she'd finished, Mr Mayer was in his car, speeding to the hospital.

''I should have talked to him and hugged him this morning, even though he is big already,'' he thought biting his lip.

He rushed in, leaving the door wide open as he got into his wife's hospital room. There, right next to her, was Jimmy, asleep and clinging to the paper he'd gotten before. His dad smiled and wiped a tiny tear out of the corner of his eye. He'd spent the day at work, worrying about both of them. Now calmer, he noticed the paper in Jimmy's hand and took it, curiosity taking over him. He opened the slightly crumpled paper before sitting down, shock and sadness written all over his face as he read “I want mom to wake up from her coma and to come back home, and for daddy to start loving me again”. At that moment, Mrs Mayer jolted slightly and woke up looked around and then at Jimmy who was fast awake. ”Mommy!” He screamed with joy as he hugged her.

The next day, Christmas morning, Mrs Mayer was allowed to leave the hospital and go home. The house was full again, the mom, the dad, the kid, everyone was fine and happy, loved and cared for, safe and sound. Now the kid got some awesome presents, cool toys and cool games but he got something better. Even though he hadn't realised it yet - he'd gotten his written wish, which had sounded impossible, all ready and delivered for Christmas. He got his mom back, and his dad's love and care. Now that's what every Christmas needs.
