Can you do origami? Can you make anything you want from it?
Our Year 3 artist Hyun gyu has made so many figurines that we had a creative writing workshop in his class this week. We talked about his origami art and his figurines, after which all the children picked one of the figurines, planned their stories using the wh-question words and started writing their stories.
(Ms Šarina and Ms Kovačević, who organised this workshop for the children, are planning on having an exhibition at school with Hyun gyu’s origami and their stories.)
This was not all! Hyun gyu then had his first appearance as an origami artist in Year 8 where he was interviewed by the pupils about his creations. Here is what they asked him…
BZ: When did you first see someone make an origami?
HYUN GYU: I don’t exactly know. I think I was about 4.
BZ: And when did you start learning how to make it?
HYUN GYU: When I was 4.
BZ: So you started immediately as you saw it?
HYUN GYU: Yes, I did.
BZ: Who taught you how to make the first ones?
HYUN GYU: My mother did.
BZ: Have you ever taught someone to do origami?
HYUN GYU: Yes, I have. I taught a friend in my class. But only simple animals.
BZ: Where do you get your inspiration from?
HYUN GYU: Mostly I check out videos on YouTube.
BZ: How old are you?
HYUN GYU: I’m nine.
BZ: What’s your favourite colour to use?
HYUN GYU: It’s red.
BZ: Can you make an origami car?
HYUN GYU: Yes, I can.
BZ: Do you ever get frustrated when some don’t turn out well?
HYUN GYU: Yes, I throw them in the trash.
BZ: How long does it take you to make one?
HYUN GYU: It depends how complicated they are – from 5 minutes to two days.
BZ: Is there anything you’d like to make but can’t?
HYUN GYU: No, I can make anything I want.
BZ: Do you think you could make a castle and how long would it take?
HYUN GYU: Oh yes, I could. It would probably take me about 3-4 days.
BZ: What other hobbies do you have?
HYUN GYU: I have many hobbies but I like to draw the most.
BZ: Which of these origami figurines is your favourite?
HYUN GYU: The biggest one. It took me two days to make.
We certainly adore the biggest one, but everyone had their favourite. There is a rabbit, couture sunglasses, fox, unicorn, T-Rex, crocodile and several characters from famous TV shows and cartoons. Take a look at this amazing origami storytelling workshop gallery! We hope we can soon show you the stories Year 3 came up with! It will be so great!
