ANTHEM ON THE HORIZON
We asked with Ms Ivanovć about her love of music and the magic that happens with it.
What is the purpose of an anthem and why do people write them?
An anthem is a rousing or uplifting song identified with a particular group, body, or cause. Many people have a message they want to share with the world, spread a little light and love. Sometimes they want to share an idea or cause they believe in. There's great satisfaction in the creative process, and our students know it!
A little bird told us one of our classes is writing an anthem for our school. Can you tell us a bit more?
We have a nosy bird flying around our school! But I have to say, the little bird was right, one of our classes is working really hard. It is a unique music-making creative project that supports our students to write, record and perform their very own School Anthem. On of our classes is focusing on our school’s ethos or values and turning it into a song!
What was the most challenging part of their task?
All of our students experience a wide variety of things at school, which is a crucial aspect of growing up. The most challenging part was to fit everything that we wanted into our anthem, all our feelings, thoughts, emotions, values. At school, students are in fact learning about themselves, and about others. They are learning about their capabilities, they are learning what it is they have to offer to the world, and they are learning to look up and beyond who they are currently are, to who they can and should become. And we wanted to show that to everybody.
When can we hear it?
Our work is still in progress. I can tell you one thing for sure, the little bird will be the first one to know! :)
Why is music important for people?
I always think of one sentence, when asked this question: “When words fail you, music is there to help you”. When words fail, music communicates to everyone and is understood everywhere. Unquestionably, music is a gift that unites people on a worldwide level. It is a form of art. Music improves confidence, resilience, health and wellbeing, and is of course a creative outlet. As you can see, we can talk about it for hours, you know where to find me! :)
What kind of music do you like to listen to? Do you have a favourite song that always pulls you through troubles?
I like to listen to any kind of music that is sweet and soothing to my ears, depending on my mood that day. That could be hip-hop in the morning and classical music in my car in the afternoon. This week’s favourite song was “Walking on sunshine.” Let me know what is yours!
